Bake It Happen!
Last May, I was lucky enough to be selected as one of Ford’s Warriors in Pink NYC Models of Courage. This is an amazing program that Ford started over 20 years ago to give breast cancer patients more good days! All of the MOCs are impressive and courageous in their own way, but today I am going to tell you about Shari Brooks. Shari was the lone “co-survivor” in our NYC group. Her mother, Judy, died from metastatic breast cancer.
At first I wondered if it would be hard for Shari to relate to our stories, many of which were gruesome and more about the physical aspect of the disease, which she had not experienced first-hand. However, within moments of meeting this class-act, funny, whip-smart powerhouse of a woman – my concerns were put to rest. She is full of compassion, empathy, and of course “got it” after knowing what her mother went through – although I think she would have “gotten it” anyway. She’s incredible, and she of course has launched an incredible, fun, and delicious program to raise money for breast cancer. She and her sister started a great blog, in their mother’s honor, called My Judy The Foodie . They are also on their 3rd year of the incredible #Bake It Happen Fundraising campaign to raise money for breast cancer research.
Now, anyone that knows me knows I love to have fun, I love to eat, and I really like to live. I would love to keep doing that last one for many more years. So Bake it Happen is a Win, Win, Win for me. It could not be easier. You go on their website by clicking on the Bake It Happen Button right on my home page for the month of October, go to http://www.bakeithappen.net, or just be lazy and click right here, then follow the simple directions!
Sign up and get the 3 featured recipes, Bake, Share, WIN (you have a chance to win an iPod or cupcakes by Melissa!). Every time you post or email a picture of your baked treats to Bake it Happen, an anonymous donor will give $5 to The Pink Pumpkin Patch Foundation for breast cancer research! SO EASY!! Um…Shari, you forgot to put EAT in there as a step – it should say Bake, Share, Eat, WIN – but don’t worry, ye of zero willpower over here swiftly inserted that 4th step into the lineup. I suppose you could also choose not to toss every single cupcake into your piehole (like Bella and I did), and share them with friends and neighbors. If you are a little crafty – you can print out cute labels to put on a box or bag and tell others about the great cause while you share!
My daughter Bella and I got started with our baking Friday night. She wanted to start with Judy’s Black Bottom Cupcakes (duh!) – but we intend to bake and eat our way through all 3 recipes. Bella has celiac, so we just swapped out the flour for gluten free flour and it was so easy. We baked, we ate, we shared our pictures, and felt great that money was donated to research just from what we did in our kitchen!

This really is a great way to get the whole family involved in Breast Cancer Awareness month, and I got to talk to her about my amazing friend Shari, her amazing mom Judy, and how people have such creative ways of fundraising! Go to My Judy The Foodie or http://www.bakeithappen.net to learn more about Bake It Happen and get baking!
