How It Works
Hope Scarves collects scarves and stories from people who have faced cancer and then sends these scarves and stories on to others in treatment. Whether you are a patient, survivor or loved one of someone with cancer Hope Scarves can be a resource for you.
Patient
how it works – patientIf you are currently in treatment, you can request a Hope Scarf at no cost. Each scarf comes wrapped in a happy package with a scarf, story, scarf-tying instructions and information about Hope Scarves. We hope each time you wear your scarf or hold it in your hands you feel the love and support of all those involved in our mission. When you are ready we hope you will send your scarf back to Hope Scarves (along with any other scarves you collect) and add your story. Then, this Hope Scarf will continue on to someone else facing cancer. Some of our scarves already carry four stories.

Family/Friend of Patient
how it works – loved oneSending a Hope Scarf to a loved one in treatment is a meaningful and practical way to show support. We created the Gift Scarf Program as a way to send Hope Scarves to loved ones with a personal message of encouragement. As a nonprofit organization we rely on donations to fulfill our mission and hope you will make a donation (no matter how big or small) in honor of your recipient when you place a request.
Send a Hope Scarf to someone you care about.
Survivor
how it works – survivorWe believe you are a survivor from the time you are diagnosed. Survivor involvement is key to Hope Scarves’ ability to support others in treatment. You can share your story, donate scarves and spread the word about our program. You can also become a Hope Scarves Ambassador.
Share your story
Whether newly diagnosed, in treatment, living with metastatic disease or living years beyond, we all have a story to tell. Our stories help us find common ground and bring us strength. Sharing your story with Hope Scarves is a meaningful way to live life over cancer. We created the story donation form to make the process easy and less intimidating. You can share your story through our form or however you wish. Some stories are pictures, others are essays. Your story is yours to tell! If you have scarves you can send them in with your story. If not, your story will be paired with a community scarf and begin its journey as a Hope Scarf. We don’t share your personal information, just your first name.
Share your survivor story.
Donate Scarves
Some survivors may not feel comfortable sharing their story with us, or just aren’t ready. Do not let that keep you from donating your head covers. To donate scarves only, go to their link and follow the directions.
Spread the word
As a survivor we’d love your help spreading the word about Hope Scarves. Request a promo kit to share with your cancer center or support group. Each kit contains brochures and information on hosting a scarf drive.
Ambassador Program
Our Ambassador Program is like a little army of hope sharing our program around the world. We will get you started with material and help answer questions as you share our program in your community.
Community Supporter
Hope Scarves also accepts scarf donations from people who do not have cancer. Organizations such as schools, churches, book groups and more have held scarf drives to help enhance our Hope Scarf Collection. These community scarves are paired with a survivor story and then start their journey as a Hope Scarf.
In addition to our on-going scarf collection and distribution Hope Scarves hosts community writing, scarf-making and scarf-tying workshops to support cancer patients and survivors. Currently these workshops are only offered in Louisville, KY where our office is based, but we’d love to bring them to new communities. We also have a hospital partnership program where Hope Scarves are available for patients at the point of treatment. To date Hope Scarves are available in 8 hospitals in Michigan, Kentucky and Alabama.
Whether you are a patient, survivor or have a loved one facing cancer Hope Scarves can be a resource for you! We welcome questions and ideas anytime!
