Arty and Bette were side-by-side always. They met at a friend’s wedding and were married for almost 57 years. They were inseparable. Tragically, Arty and Bette passed away suddenly on February 8, 2023 due to a motor vehicle/train incident near their winter home in Delray Beach, Florida.
Arty and Bette cherished the time they spent with friends in Milford, Connecticut where they lived for over 55 years, and Delray Beach, Florida where they spent winters for over 30 years. They had a gift of creating life-long friends and making each relationship special. They loved being active together and sharing new experiences. They enjoyed life to the fullest and were always on the go from casual dinners, to long drives, traveling wherever life called, playing sports themselves, to watching their kids and then grandkids play sports. Love of sports was woven through their life.
Arty and Bette loved their family most of all. When you needed or wanted Bette and Art they came running. Their greatest joy was spending time with their children and grandchildren which included attending every activity and sports games in which their loved ones participated.
Arty was born in Brooklyn, New York in 1940, graduated City College of New York and received an advanced engineering degree at Columbia University. He was a committed, hard-working man who began his career as an engineer, but was an entrepreneur at heart. In time, he built his own business, Connecticut Tree and Turf Guard. He was a character with a never-ending quest for humor in all situations. He was a math wizard and had an insatiable thirst for knowledge that he loved teaching his children, his grandchildren and his friends. Throughout his life he had a passion for sports, especially basketball. Arty was a generous and reliable man who loved to be the life of the party.
Bette was born in Yonkers, New York and graduated from Bridgeport University. She was a teacher before dedicating herself to raising her children. She later joined Arty at Connecticut Tree and Turf Guard where they worked side-by-side for more than 25 years. Bette was loved by everyone for her kindness, warm smile and positivity and her ability to be there to support others at a moment’s notice. She enjoyed playing golf, going on long walks and time with her family most of all.
Arthur and Bette are survived by their children Leslie (Jeff) Mertz and Evan (Michele Angel) Jacobson and their beloved grandchildren Alec, Gavin and Julia who were the lights of their life. They were predeceased by their son Keith, and as they wished will now be laid to rest beside him for all eternity. Arthur is predeceased by his parents Edward and Jessie Jacobson (Goldberg), and his sister Barbara Zinn (Jacobson) and brother Ronald Jacobson. Bette is predeceased by her parents William and Evelyn Greene (Herzlich) and her brother Burt Greene.
